Art on the Avenue will host the Sixth Annual Pie-Baking Contest on Saturday, October 2, during the Festival.
The Homemade Pies will be on display starting at noon next to the Festival Store (between Del Ray and Oxford Avenues). Judging begins at 12:15 p.m. Cash Prizes are awarded on overall appearance, crust, filling, and originality.
No matter how you slice it, however, everyone who enters is a winner! After judging, pies will be available for $3 a slice with all proceeds going to the local non-profit SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now – www.scanva.org )
So go find Old Aunt Bertha’s Blueberry Pie recipe, dust off that rolling pin and crank up the oven (the large square box in the middle of your kitchen…you know, the thing you re-heat pizza in.)
There will be two divisions
- Youth (age 18 and under)
- Adult
Cash Prize
- $75 for 1st place
- $50 for 2nd place
- $25 for 3rd place
All entries will be judged on
- Overall appearance - 25 points
- Crust (flavor, texture and aroma) - 25 points
- Filling (flavor and consistency) - 25 points
- Originality - 25 points
The Rules:
- All entries must come from amateur bakers. No professionals please!
- Pies must be homemade: All entries must be baked at home from scratch (no pre-mixes, canned fillings, commercial mixes, puddings, etc.)
- Pies must be entered at room temperature. (There is no refrigeration available. So for health and safety concerns, pies that require refrigeration cannot be accepted such as custards, meringue, etc.)
- Pies must be baked in an 8-10 inch pie pan
- Pies should be brought in disposable containers (unless pie dish is marked with name and phone number)
- Pies must be brought to the “Festival Store” for Art on the Avenue between 10am and Noon sharp on the October 2nd. (In order to keep on schedule, late entries might not be accepted so please note the noon deadline. The Festival Store will be located between Del Ray and Oxford Avenues on Mt. Vernon Avenue)
- Each pie must be accompanied by an entry form (under construction, please check back later to download a copy of the form.)
- Contest is open to everyone and each contestant can enter as many pies as they wish (a separate entry form must accompany each pie)
- All pies will become the property of Art on the Avenue.
- Judging will begin at 12:15 p.m.
- The winners names will be announced as soon as possible following judging and will be posted on a display board for the remainder of the festival as well as posted here as soon as possible after the festival.
